Plaistow Primary School

Geography

At Plaistow our children become confident geographers who ask questions and enquire to find out about the world around them.

In Key Stage One pupils develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality. They understand subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.

In Key Stage Two pupils extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, North and South America. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. They develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.

In the Early Years (Reception and Nursery) children are guided to make sense of their physical world and their community. We support out children to their knowledge and sense of the world through personal experience – from visiting parks, libraries and museums to meeting important members of society such as police officers, charity workers and professionals in our community. They are encouraged to understand the world around them through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling, and foster an understanding of our culturally, socially, technologically and ecologically diverse world.
